Ladyswell Apartments

Colt designed and installed a mechanical Colt Shaft system to ventilate and protect the residents and infrastructure of this luxury apartment block in the event of fire.

The Colt shaft is a mechanical shaft system which provides equivalent performance to a BRE shaft for the ventilation of fire fighting lobbies. It can therefore be considered to the recommendations of Approved Document B and BS 5588-5:2004 for ventilation of fire fighting shafts.

Designed by Dooley Architects and built by Chrysalis Developments Ltd., Ladyswell Apartments is located along the edge of Lough Atalia, overlooking Galway Bay in an exceedingly picturesque setting.

The main feature of the Colt Shaft system is the space reduction in using a mechanical shaft as opposed to a natural shaft. Colt provided and installed the complete system of mechanical extract fans, termination vent, dampers, grilles, pressure sensors and controls to the apartment block.

Colt also provided a Seefire combination unit which acts as an access hatch as well an Automatic Opening Ventilator (AOV), complying with the requirements of Technical Guidance Document B (TGD-B) of the Irish Building Regulations 2006.
